Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church                                                                        2009-2010 School Year

Elementary Faith Formation (K-5)

Reverend William J. Mitchell Learning Center

We gather.       We believe.       We respond.

Our Mission

The Elementary Catechetical program of Holy Cross Catholic Church seeks to provide parents and children with the knowledge, experiences, and skills necessary to become faithful and fruitful disciples of Jesus. In keeping with their age, they will assume responsibilities as active members of the parish and be able to participate in the Catholic Church’s mission to proclaim, celebrate, and serve in the faith community.

Our Goal

Our goal is to assist parents in the role of developing the Catholic faith formation in their families by:

·         * Offering weekly formation classes

·         * Providing resources and training to catechists for their own faith development/ teaching methods

·         * Offering classes to parents while children are in class

·         * Sacrament preparation

Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning September 22 and 23, 2009

  • Tuesday   4:30 - 5:45 pm or

  • Tuesday   6:30 - 7:45 pm or

  • Wednesday   5:00 pm

Classes for parents will be held at the same time period.

Liturgy of the Word for Children From September to May, Liturgy of the Word for Children (CLOW) is offered at the 10:00 am, 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm Sunday Masses. No registration is required for your children to be a part of this program. They simply come forward when the invitation is extended.  Children, ages 5 to 10 years old, are dismissed to hear the Sunday readings proclaimed from an official Children’s Lectionary in language they more easily understand. A dialogue homily between adult leaders and the children helps them to reflect more appropriately on how Scripture applies to their lives.

R.E. Resource Websites

Below are listed some wonderful websites with ideas for discussing the Sunday readings and other creative resources for helping to teach children about their faith:

Stewardship

Parents, you can help your children make a difference!!!

When children explore their personal gifts, faith and participation in the community, it leads them to a sense of responsibility, respect and gratitude for all that God has given them.

When stewardship is taught as a way of life, their lives will be impacted forever. They quickly learn that stewardship is:

  • The way we take care of the things and people that God has given us.
  • How we use the talents we were blessed with.
  • The way we say “thank you to God.”

     Opportunities for sharing of their time, talent, and treasure . . .ure . . .ure . . .ure . . .ure . . .ure . . .

·         Befriend someone who is lonely or outcast at school.

·         Help a teacher.

·         Forgive someone you are angry with.

·         Say extra prayers or a rosary for someone or a particular event.

·         Help an elderly neighbor.

·         Do chores without being reminded.

·         Pick up litter around the neighborhood or school.

·         Contribute some allowance or do a chore to earn money to give.

·         Recycle paper, cans, bottles, plastic etc.

Through stewardship, children discover what a difference giving makes in their daily lives, and what they can do to make a difference in the lives of others.

Envelopes are available in the Religious Education Office if you would like to have your child participate. On the envelope they can indicate a good deed or a monetary donation and drop it in the collection basket at Sunday Mass.
