The History of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church

On August 1, 1978, Father William J. Mitchell left Queen of Peace Parish to establish the new Parish of Holy Cross.
Eight acres of land were purchased at Power and Southern Roads. Architects were George Christensen and Associates. Porter Brothers Construction Company Mesa, was the builder of the 825 seat church.
Ground breaking ceremonies were held on September 14, 1980. Construction began on December 15, 1980 and work was completed November 15, 1981.
The first mass was celebrated on November 19, 1981. Dedication ceremonies took place on March 9, 1982 with Bishop Thomas O'Brien officiating.

- Fr. William Mitchell, Pastor of Queen of Peace, leaves to establish Holy Cross.
- August 17, 1978
- Eight acres at the Southwest corner of Power & Southern are purchased by the Diocese from Western Savings & Loan.
- August 27, 1978
- Parish Building Committee is formed.
- March 12, 1979
- George Christensen & Associates of Phoenix are approved as architects for the new church.
- May 10, 1979
- Bishop Rausch authorizes a ceiling of $1,167,000 for church construction.
- October 15, 1979
- Porter Brothers Construction Company of Mesa is awarded construction contract with a bid of $939,000.
- September 14, 1980
- Groundbreaking ceremonies are held on the Feast of the Holy Cross.
- December 15, 1980
- Construction begins.
- March 7, 1981
- Church cornerstone is laid.
- November 15, 1981
- Church, offices and Anderson Hall are completed.
- November 19, 1981
- First masses in the new church are celebrated.
- March 9, 1982
- Dedication of the church by Bishop O'Brien.
- September 13, 2005
- Parish celebrates 25th Anniversary of ground breaking.
